Happy Juneteenth!
Happy Juneteenth!
Today marks three years since the U.S. first celebrated Juneteenth National Independence Day as a federal holiday. President Biden signed it into law, on June 17th, 2021, nearly 200 years after the first push to gain national recognition.
On December 31st, 1862, Enslaved and Free Black people celebrated “Freedom’s Eve,” the night before the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. However, it would take 2,000 Union troops arriving in Galveston Bay, Texas to emancipate the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people living there on June 19th, 1865. The day became known as “Juneteenth,” celebrating the emancipation of Black people, and the collective liberation of the Black Community.
